IELTS Band 8 writing examples
Band 8 writing is a strong Band 7 with fuller extension and sharper language. Ideas are not just supported but explained at the level of mechanism, cohesion becomes invisible because meaning does the linking, and vocabulary is wide, natural and precise. Errors are rare and never systematic.
What Band 8 means in each criterion
These are plain-language summaries of the public IELTS band descriptors. Your band in each criterion is judged against these, and your overall writing band is capped by your weakest one.
- Task Response
- The position is fully developed and nuanced. Counter-arguments are not merely acknowledged but answered convincingly, and every point is extended to its consequence.
- Coherence and Cohesion
- Cohesion is seamless and mostly invisible: ideas connect through meaning and well-judged referencing rather than through visible linking words.
- Lexical Resource
- A wide, natural range used flexibly and precisely, with skilful collocation and no awkwardness. Nothing reads as memorised.
- Grammatical Range and Accuracy
- A broad range of structures produced accurately and flexibly, with only occasional slips that never affect clarity.
