IELTS Two-Part Question Essays

A two-part question, sometimes called a direct question, asks you two separate questions in one prompt. The most common way to lose marks is answering one question fully and barely touching the other, so plan a body paragraph for each.

How to structure it

  1. Introduction

Paraphrase the topic and briefly signal that you will answer both questions.

  2. Body 1

Answer the first question fully, with a reason and an example.

  3. Body 2

Answer the second question fully, in the same way.

  4. Conclusion

Give a short, direct answer to both questions together.

Common mistakes that cost marks

  • Answering only one of the two questions, which caps Task Response.
  • Misreading the second question, which is often a "why", a "positive or negative", or a "what can be done".
  • Giving general opinions instead of directly answering what was asked.
  • A conclusion that wraps up only one of the two answers.

Common questions

How do I structure two questions?

Give each question its own body paragraph. That guarantees you answer both fully and keeps the essay easy to follow.

Do the two questions carry equal weight?

Treat them as equal. Answer both with the same depth, since rushing or ignoring one lowers your Task Response score.
