Band 6 vs Band 7 IELTS Writing: what actually changes

Most people picture Band 7 as Band 6 with fancier vocabulary. Examiners see it differently: Band 7 is Band 6 with development, control, and precision. Here is the difference criterion by criterion, in side by side sentences.

Task Response: named ideas vs developed ideas

Band 6 names its points. Band 7 develops them until the reader can see the consequence.

Free university is good because more people can study. Also, it helps the economy. When places depend on ability rather than a family bank balance, talented students who would otherwise be priced out become the doctors and engineers the economy needs.

Same idea, same vocabulary level, one band apart. The Band 7 sentence explains the mechanism: who benefits, why, and what follows. This is the single most common blocker, and no grammar tool can see it.

Coherence: visible glue vs invisible glue

Firstly, cars cause pollution. Secondly, cars cause traffic. Also, parking is a problem. The most visible cost of car dependence is congestion, but the deeper one is pollution, which continues even when the traffic is moving.

Band 6 cohesion is a numbered list wearing connectives. Band 7 cohesion comes from the ideas themselves being in an order that means something, with linking that shows the relationship ("but the deeper one") rather than just the sequence.

Vocabulary: impressive vs precise

In this day and age, a plethora of individuals utilise public transportation. Most commuters now rely on buses and trains for their daily journey to work.

This surprises people: the left column often scores LOWER. Memorised openers and thesaurus swaps signal Band 6 because they are imprecise and unnatural. Band 7 vocabulary is specific ("commuters", "daily journey") rather than decorative.

Grammar: safe vs varied

Many people work from home. It has many benefits. They save time. They feel less stress. Working from home saves employees the hours they once lost to commuting, which is why many report feeling noticeably less stressed.

Error-free simple sentences cap at Band 6, because the descriptor rewards range as well as accuracy. Band 7 needs complex structures (relative clauses, conditionals, concession) used mostly without error. Attempted but broken complex sentences also stay at 6, so the target is controlled variety, not maximum complexity.

Sentence pairs show the principle; full essays show the texture. Read a worked Band 6.5 example next to a Band 7 example of the same essay type, and the difference stops being abstract. Every sample includes a per-criterion breakdown and the one fix that would lift it.
