IELTS Problem and Solution Essays
These questions describe a problem and ask for its causes and solutions, sometimes worded as causes and effects. The key to a high band is making your solutions clearly address the causes you named, rather than listing unrelated fixes.
How to structure it
-
Introduction
Paraphrase the problem and say that you will look at its causes and how to address them.
-
Body 1
Explain the main cause of the problem, developed with an example.
-
Body 2
Give a solution that directly tackles that cause, and explain how it would help.
-
Conclusion
Summarise the main cause and its solution.
Common mistakes that cost marks
- Solutions that do not match the causes you gave. Tie each solution back to a specific cause.
- Vague solutions like "the government should take action" with no detail on what action.
- Writing about effects when the question asks for causes, or the reverse.
- Listing five shallow causes instead of developing one or two.

Should I put causes and solutions in separate paragraphs?
Either works. A clean approach is one paragraph for the main cause and one for a solution that addresses it, so the link between them is obvious.
How detailed should my solutions be?
Detailed enough to be realistic. Say who should act and what they should do, and explain why it would work, rather than naming a vague fix.
