IELTS Discuss Both Views Essays
This question gives you two opposing views and asks you to discuss both, then give your own opinion. The trap is forgetting the second half: many candidates describe both sides well but never make their own position clear, which caps Task Response.
How to structure it
-
Introduction
Paraphrase both views, then state which one you find more convincing.
-
Body 1
Explain the first view fairly, as if you held it, with a reason and an example.
-
Body 2
Explain the second view the same way, then make clear which side you favour and why.
-
Conclusion
Summarise both views in one line and restate your own opinion.
Common mistakes that cost marks
- Forgetting to give your own opinion. "Discuss both views" almost always adds "and give your own opinion".
- Treating one view fairly and the other dismissively. Give both a genuine, balanced explanation.
- Hiding your opinion in vague phrases. State it plainly, in the introduction and again in the conclusion.
- Spending three paragraphs on one view and a single line on the other.

Where should I give my opinion?
State it in the introduction and again in the conclusion, and lean towards it in your body paragraphs. Making the examiner hunt for your view costs marks.
Can my opinion be that both views are equally valid?
It is safer to favour one side. A clear position is easier to support and shows the examiner you can take a stance.
