Band 7 model answer (151 words)
Dear Ms Harper,
I am writing to inform you of my decision to resign from my position as customer service supervisor.
I have recently been offered a place on a full-time management course in Manchester, which begins in September. After a great deal of thought, I have decided this is an opportunity I cannot turn down, as it supports the long-term career goals we have often discussed.
In line with my contract, I am giving four weeks' notice, so my final day would be Friday 7 August. Before then, I will complete the current staff rota and prepare full handover notes for my replacement.
I would like to thank you sincerely for the support and training you have given me over the past three years. I have learned an enormous amount in this role, and I leave with genuine gratitude and many good memories of the team.
Yours sincerely,
Priya Nair
Why this reaches Band 7
-
Task Achievement
All three bullets are handled fully: a specific reason ("a full-time management course in Manchester"), an exact finishing date with notice period, and sincere, personal thanks. Offering handover notes goes slightly beyond the task, which strengthens it.
-
Coherence and Cohesion
Purpose first, then reason, then practicalities, then thanks: the conventional resignation shape, executed with clear one-idea paragraphs.
-
Lexical Resource
Appropriate formal vocabulary such as "inform you of my decision", "in line with my contract" and "genuine gratitude", with no casual drift.
-
Grammatical Range and Accuracy
Accurate complex sentences throughout, and the named greeting is correctly paired with "Yours sincerely" rather than "Yours faithfully".
The one fix to reach Band 7
Band 6 resignation letters often give a vague reason ("for personal reasons") and skip the exact leaving date. The single change that reaches Band 7 is being concrete on both: name the reason and state the final working day, so the letter could actually be acted on.
