Band 7 model answer (168 words)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to apply for the part time position of café assistant, which I saw advertised in the window of your coffee shop on Bridge Street last week.

I believe I would be well suited to this role. I am currently a full time student, but I have two years of experience working in a busy restaurant at weekends, where I served customers, handled payments and helped train new staff. I am friendly, reliable and able to stay calm when the café is busy, and I am comfortable working as part of a team.

As for availability, I am free to work on weekday evenings and at any time during the weekend, which I understand are your busiest periods. I could begin as soon as the start of next month, and I would be happy to attend an interview whenever it is convenient for you.

I have attached my CV and would welcome the chance to discuss my application in person. Thank you for considering my application.

Yours faithfully,

Daniel Rivera

Why this reaches Band 7

  • Task Achievement

All three bullet points are covered clearly: "the part time position of café assistant" and where it was advertised, the relevant skills and experience, and a clear start date. The purpose is stated in the opening line.

  • Coherence and Cohesion

The letter moves logically from the application to the candidate's experience to availability, with clear paragraphs and linking such as "As for availability".

  • Lexical Resource

Appropriate formal vocabulary like "well suited to this role", "two years of experience working in a busy restaurant at weekends" and "convenient", with no casual phrasing.

  • Grammatical Range and Accuracy

Accurate complex sentences and a consistent formal tone, with the correct greeting and sign-off ("Dear Sir or Madam" paired with "Yours faithfully").

The one fix to reach Band 7

Band 6 application letters often stay vague about skills, saying only "I am a hard worker". The key fix is to name specific, relevant experience, such as serving customers and handling payments in a restaurant, and to answer all three bullet points, including a clear start date.

Paste your own attempt at this prompt and Examinerly names the single criterion keeping you below your target band, and shows the sentence-level fix. We never inflate your band.
