The prompt

Some people believe that studying online from home is now as effective as attending classes in person, while others think classroom learning remains better. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Band 7 model answer (263 words)

Online courses now allow students to earn qualifications without ever entering a classroom, and opinion is divided on whether this matches face-to-face education. In my view, distance learning is genuinely effective for motivated adults, but the classroom remains better for most learners.

Supporters of online study point first to access. A parent in a rural town can take a course from a leading university without moving house or giving up a job, which was impossible a generation ago. Digital learning is also flexible and often cheaper: lectures can be replayed until a difficult idea makes sense, and students pay nothing for travel or accommodation. For disciplined learners with clear goals, these advantages are hard to beat.

Those who favour the classroom argue that education is more than the delivery of content. A teacher who can see confusion on students' faces adjusts the lesson in the moment, something no recorded lecture does. Classmates matter too, because discussion, competition and simple routine keep people studying when motivation dips. This is why completion rates for online courses are notoriously low: the material is available, but the structure that carries students through difficult weeks is missing.

Weighing the two, I side with the classroom for most people, because motivation is the scarcest resource in education and in-person study protects it best. Online learning is a superb option, not a full replacement.

In conclusion, distance learning has made education more open and affordable, but the support and discipline of the classroom still produce better results for the majority, and I believe both will continue to serve different needs.

Why this reaches Band 7

  • Task Response

Both views are developed with reasons and consequences, and the opinion is precise: not "classrooms are better" flatly, but better "for most learners", with the motivated-adult exception acknowledged. That precision is Band 7 territory.

  • Coherence and Cohesion

One view per paragraph, then an evaluation that gives a reason for choosing sides ("motivation is the scarcest resource in education"). Ideas connect through logic as much as through linkers.

  • Lexical Resource

Expressive but controlled vocabulary: "when motivation dips", "notoriously low", "the structure that carries students through difficult weeks".

  • Grammatical Range and Accuracy

Wide range with high accuracy, including relative clauses and the balanced final sentence contrasting openness with results.

The one fix to reach Band 7

A Band 6 discuss-both-views essay treats the two sides as separate lists that never touch. The single change that reaches 7 is making the evaluation paragraph compare them directly, naming the reason one side wins, rather than simply announcing a preference.
