The prompt
More and more people are choosing to work from home rather than in a traditional office. Do the advantages of this trend outweigh the disadvantages?
Band 7 model answer (261 words)
It is increasingly common for employees to work from home instead of commuting to an office each day. While this shift brings some drawbacks, I believe its advantages clearly outweigh them.
The main benefit of home working is the time and freedom it gives people. Without a daily commute, workers save hours that can be spent on family, rest or exercise, which tends to make them healthier and more satisfied. Many also concentrate better away from the noise and interruptions of an open office, so their productivity actually rises. For employers, allowing staff to work remotely can lower the cost of office space and help them keep talented people who value flexibility.
The clearest disadvantage is the loss of face-to-face contact. Working alone at home can feel isolating, and the casual conversations that spark ideas or solve problems quickly are harder to have online. Some workers also struggle to separate their job from their personal life when both happen in the same space, which can lead to longer hours and stress.
However, these problems can largely be managed. Regular video meetings and occasional days in the office keep teams connected, and setting clear working hours helps people protect their personal time. The benefits, by contrast, are difficult to replicate in a traditional office.
In conclusion, although working from home can be isolating and can blur the line between work and rest, the gains in flexibility, wellbeing and productivity are greater. In my view, the advantages of this trend outweigh the disadvantages, provided that companies take simple steps to keep staff connected.
